How I Lost a Stone in 12 Weeks and Turned My Life Around

4 min read

So, there I was, sitting in the nurse’s office, when she dropped the bombshell: I had gone from being prediabetic to full-blown diabetic. Not exactly the news I was hoping for. My wife, Sumin, looked worried, and I couldn’t blame her. The nurse asked about my diet, and I couldn’t help but think about the delicious doughnuts I had indulged in during my recent trip to South Korea. I assured her that my diet was ‘pretty good’, but deep down, I knew I had to make some changes.

The nurse then checked my blood pressure, and it was a little high. She decided to take another reading, which turned out to be even higher. That’s when she diagnosed me with hypertension and prescribed medication. She reassured me that I still had a chance to turn things around, but I needed to make some lifestyle changes.

Fast forward to today, and I am proud to say that I have made significant progress. My blood sugar levels have dropped to normal, my blood pressure is ideal, and I have even managed to lose a stone. It’s truly amazing what a few weeks of dedication can do.

So, how did I do it? Well, it all started with my diet. I knew I had to cut back on carbs and sugary treats. Goodbye, doughnuts! I also tried to avoid processed foods as much as possible. I didn’t go crazy with complicated diets or protein powders; I simply made healthier choices. Instead of reaching for a bag of crisps, I opted for a banana.

But diet alone wasn’t enough. I needed to get active. The problem was, I had no idea where to start. Years of sitting at a desk had left me stiff and clueless about exercise. Thankfully, my wife came to the rescue. She suggested we join a local health club that had everything we needed to get fit.

We met with a personal trainer who specialized in working with clients like me, who had back pain and joint issues. He explained the importance of strength training and assured us that we wouldn’t bulk up like bodybuilders. He also emphasized the need for consistency and patience.

And so, our fitness journey began. We started going to the gym three times a week, with two sessions led by our personal trainer and one solo workout. It wasn’t always easy, but we held each other accountable and motivated each other to keep going.

I won’t lie; there were days when I wanted to give up. But my fear of getting sicker outweighed my fear of the gym. I knew I had to do something, and I had to do it now. And slowly but surely, I started to see results. My muscles grew, my energy levels increased, and I even started to enjoy going to the gym.

Of course, changing my diet was also a challenge. I had always been a ‘you only live once’ kind of eater, but I knew I had to make healthier choices. It’s a work in progress, but I’m getting there.

So, here I am, 12 weeks later, feeling stronger and healthier than ever. I can’t believe the transformation I have undergone in such a short amount of time. And the best part? My wife and I have grown closer through this journey. It’s amazing what a couple of hours a week can do.

I still have a long way to go, but I’m committed to making this a lifelong habit. I want to be around for many more years, and I know that taking care of my health is the key.

As I sit here writing this, munching on a scone (hey, I’m only human), I can’t help but feel grateful for the changes I have made. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it. So, if you’re thinking about making a change, don’t wait. Start today and see where your journey takes you. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
