Coco Gauff’s signature New Balance CG1 tennis shoes have been making waves on the court. And with Coco’s name emblazoned on the tongue, they’re a recipe for success. But do they live up to the hype? We put them to the test.
The standout feature of the New Balance Coco CG1 is the Energy Arc, a carbon fibre plate in the midsole that propels you forward and cushions hard impact shots. Paired with New Balance’s FuelCell foam, these shoes keep you on your toes and provide dynamic support. The elastic saddle gore band across the mid-foot also does a great job of locking down the foot.
One concern many tennis players may have is the raised ankle collar. Will it feel too restrictive? While there was some initial rubbing on the inside right ankle, it wasn’t a major issue. And with a bit of experimentation with the lacing, the shoes felt snug with just the right amount of breathing space.
At first glance, the Coco CG1 may seem bulky, but once you put them on and start moving, that thought quickly disappears. Despite weighing in at 475g, these shoes are surprisingly agile and mould around your foot nicely. They can easily compete with low cut speed-focused shoes.
When it comes to ventilation, there is a trade-off. The airflow is average, neither exceptional nor disappointing.
