Single Mum Beats Obesity and Launches Free Community Fitness Club

1 min read

A single mum who managed to lose over four stone through exercise has started her own free outdoor mental health support group. Sylwia Juranek, 38, launched Active Stars at George Rose Park in Darlaston after her journey to overcome obesity inspired her. She struggled to walk 3,000 steps in 2019, but gradually increased her daily steps to 18,000 by trying to keep up with her son on his bike. Sylwia’s own mental health struggles, including unresolved childhood traumas and the challenges of being a single mother, motivated her to create a space where parents can find support. She wants children to grow up in healthy families and understand the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. Sylwia reached out to parents in her community and the club began to grow through word of mouth. Active Stars is part of the community interest company Reach for a Star, which Sylwia founded. The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Chris Towe, and his daughter Louise, the Mayoress, officially opened Active Stars on Saturday. The club meets every Saturday at 10am in George Rose Park, Darlaston.
