Supermarket Lasagne Showdown: The Winner and Losers

I recently compared different supermarket lasagne ready meals, and let me tell you, there was a clear winner. As the weather gets colder and the nights get darker, a warm and creamy lasagne is the perfect comfort food. It’s no wonder that this Italian favourite has become a staple in supermarkets.

But not all lasagnes are created equal. There’s an art to getting the right combination of cheese, bechamel sauce, pasta sheets, and mincemeat. I wanted a lasagne that would make me say ‘bellissima’ and leave me wanting more.

In my comparison test, I found a noticeable difference in taste between the supermarket versions. And surprisingly, the price didn’t always match up with the quality.

When it comes to affordability, Aldi and Lidl are usually known for offering the cheapest products. However, when it came to lasagne, other brands like Asda, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco had better deals. It just goes to show that price doesn’t always determine the taste.

I tried various ready meal lasagnes, both in single portions and larger family sizes. Here’s what I discovered in my taste and price comparison:

Sainsbury’s Beef Lasagne:
Price: £3.25 for 400g
This Sainsbury’s lasagne was one of the more affordable options on the market. It had a British twist with Cheddar cheese instead of the traditional Italian cheese, which was a bit disappointing. The tomato flavor was rich, and there was plenty of sauce to enjoy with garlic bread. While it wasn’t entirely authentic, it gets bonus points for its price.
Rating: 3/5

Lidl Deluxe Beef Lasagne:
Price: £3.45 for 400g
Surprisingly, Lidl’s lasagne had one of the highest prices among the supermarkets. It also used Cheddar cheese and had a red wine ragu. Unfortunately, the pasta was too thick and the overall taste was not appealing or authentic. It was a struggle to finish this one.

Morrisons Beef Lasagne:
Price: £3.75 for 400g
This Morrisons lasagne was the most expensive of the bunch. It used hard Italian Regato cheese, which gave it a taste of Italy. However, the color was pale after heating it up, and the tomato flavor overpowered everything else. It didn’t stand out against its competitors.

Tesco A Taste of Italy Beef Lasagne:
Price: £3.25 for 400g
This Tesco lasagne claims to be a ‘taste of Italy,’ and it actually delivered on that promise. It had a good balance of bechamel sauce and a rich tomato, mushroom, and red wine sauce. The use of British mature Cheddar was surprising, but it still tasted great. It was also one of the cheaper options, which is always a plus.
Rating: 4/5

Aldi Specially Selected Gastro Collection Lasagne al forno:
Price: £3.39 for 400g
I tried the small version of this Aldi lasagne, but it also comes in a family size. It had authentic Italian ingredients that created a delicious dish. The golden brown top was impressive, and the flavor was rich and complex. The beef and pancetta ragu mixed with Chianti red wine sauce was a winning combination. The bechamel sauce used the famous Grana Padano cheese, which added to the overall deliciousness. This lasagne tasted like something you would get at an Italian restaurant, but at a fraction of the price.
Rating: 5/5

Asda Beef Lasagne:
Price: £3.00 for 400g
This Asda lasagne was the cheapest option, but unfortunately, the taste didn’t match up. The scent was overly fragrant, and it was over-seasoned with herbs, giving it an artificial flavor. Despite being creamy, it left a bad aftertaste. It was a disappointment and not authentic at all.
Rating: 1/5

Overall, Aldi came out on top with the best flavor and a reasonable price. It had the quality and distinctiveness you would expect from a chef’s kitchen. Tesco and Sainsbury’s also had decent offerings that were great value for money. On the other hand, Asda and Lidl were the most disappointing, and I wouldn’t recommend them.

So, if you’re in the mood for a delicious lasagne without breaking the bank, head to Aldi and give their lasagne a try. You won’t be disappointed!
