A Labrador retriever named Ava has made an incredible recovery after undergoing double hip replacement surgery with the help of Texas A&M University veterinarians and cutting-edge 3D printing technology. Ava, who has had a remarkable journey from foster care to becoming a beloved family member, faced the challenge of worn-out replacement hips in 2020. Thanks to the expertise of the veterinarians and the innovative use of 3D-printed bone models, Ava is now back to her playful self, running and enjoying life with her family.
Ava’s journey began when she was just 6 months old and was taken in by Janet and Ken Dieter, who were dog foster parents at the time. Ava quickly won their hearts and became a permanent part of their family. Despite facing multiple hip replacement surgeries, Ava has always shown incredible resilience and adaptability, becoming a source of joy and guidance for other foster puppies in the Dieters’ care.
The challenges arose when Ava’s original hip replacements started to wear out, leading to complications such as dislocation and the formation of a granuloma. Dr. Brian Saunders, a professor of small animal orthopedics at Texas A&M, explained that the advanced 3D-printing technology played a crucial role in planning and executing the complex surgeries needed to address these issues. The use of 3D bone models allowed the surgical team to meticulously plan the revision operations, ensuring a successful outcome for Ava.
Despite facing setbacks with the need for a second hip revision surgery, Ava’s spirit remained unbroken. Her remarkable recovery and resilience have been a source of inspiration for her family and the veterinary team at Texas A&M. Today, at 12 years old, Ava continues to enjoy an active lifestyle, zipping around the backyard and even jumping over the couch.
Ava’s story is a testament to the remarkable advancements in veterinary medicine and the unwavering dedication of the veterinary team at Texas A&M. Through their expertise and the innovative use of 3D printing technology, Ava has been given a new lease on life, bringing joy and happiness to her family once again.
