Newport Market’s New Interactive Games and Drinks Area

3 min read

Newport City centre has recently introduced a new interactive games and drinks area, and we just had to check it out for ourselves. There’s nothing like getting your friends together for some games and drinks, right? Well, if that’s your kind of thing, then you’ll be thrilled to hear about Shuffle & Oche, the latest addition to Newport Market.

Shuffle & Oche is made up of two rooms. One room is an interactive darts area with classic arcade games, perfect for up to 12 players. It even has its own toilet, and you can bring food and drinks from the market into the room. When I visited, I opted for a cup of tea since I was on duty.

In the Oche room, players can add their names to the interactive darts on a screen and even choose their own emoji to represent them. Of course, I went with the unicorn emoji. You can also add your own picture, so don’t forget to smile for the camera!

Meanwhile, in the Shuffle room, players are given four pucks and have to slide them along the board to try and get them into the zones labelled one, two, or three. I quickly learned that the pucks slide very fast, so my advice is to go for a lighter touch when playing.

The Shuffle room is illuminated with neon colours, immersing you in the gaming world. The goal of the two-person game is to reach a score of 10 without going above or below this number. This room accommodates up to eight people, and each game lasts around 10 minutes.

Gareth Sainty, the area operations manager for Newport Market, mentioned, “You can hire both rooms for an hour and bring in food and drinks. Each room also has its own toilet. Shuffle & Oche officially opened after a soft launch on November 1.

“The Oche room features Pacman and Donkey Kong Machines, bringing back the fun elements to the city centre. The market is thriving and expanding, offering a wide range of experiences. You can come here to shop, get your hair done, have a drink and food, and now play games.

“The goal is to provide a place where people can spend an entire day because there is so much to do here.”

Our tour of the market didn’t end there. Gareth kindly showed us the upstairs, and we were amazed by the variety of offerings available. Upstairs, visitors can visit the salon, businesses can hold conferences, and there’s even a private bar that can be hired out. Cheers to that!

On Saturday, November 17, the upstairs of the market will be transformed into a Christmas Market with stalls and games. If you’re looking for a place to have some fun with family and friends while browsing through endless stalls, then Newport Market is the place to be.
