The Shocking Truth About British Sandwiches That Has Americans Scratching Their Heads
Americans are totally baffled by a British sandwich tradition – spreading butter on the inside of sandwiches. One American took to Quora to express their disbelief after seeing this on UK cooking shows, as reported by the Express US.
They asked, “I’m American. I often notice on British cooking shows that they often spread butter on the inside of sandwiches. You never see this in America. Is that for real? Do Brits really put butter on the inside of, let’s say, a ham sandwich?”
Jeff Dray had a clear answer – calling unbuttered bread an ‘abomination’. He stated, “We definitely butter our sandwiches. It’s unimaginable that anyone would make a sandwich with dry bread. I’m very particular about the type of butter too.
“A piece of ham on dry bread isn’t a sandwich, it’s an abomination. That’s what you eat when you’re lost in the woods, struggling to survive.”
Alan Higgins was shocked at the lack of sandwich-making skills among Americans: “I just asked my daughter, she lives in America. And apparently it’s true, yanks don’t butter their sandwich bread!!
What fresh hell is this? How do they stop the tomatoes from making the bread soggy without the waterproof butter shield?”
Australians also chimed in, with one agreeing with the Brits. Lewis Phrane commented, “Australian here. What kind of monster eats a sandwich made from naked bread?!? I don’t care if people substitute other spreads for butter because they don’t like or can’t eat butter. But the whole idea of making a sandwich and not spreading something on the bread before filling it is outrageous. It’s moral turpitude.”
Even Canadians sided with the Brits. Kerri Rempel remarked, “Canadian here. Y’all don’t butter your bread south of the border? What the hell?” Clearly, the issue of buttering sandwiches is one that unites the world, except for America, of course.
