The Comeback of Sam Altman: OpenAI’s Stabilizing Move

1 min read

Following the recent departure of tech entrepreneur Sam Altman from the role of CEO, leading US artificial intelligence firm OpenAI has announced his reinstatement. In addition, the company has unveiled a new initial board, which includes prominent figures such as former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo. Altman has expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining OpenAI and expanding the collaboration with Microsoft.

The decision to reinstate Altman follows a period of internal unrest that arose after his departure, resulting in the threat of a mass exodus from the company. As a major investor in OpenAI, Microsoft has expressed its support for Altman and has revealed plans to appoint him to lead a new artificial intelligence research team. Furthermore, the company has extended an invitation to any OpenAI employees who wish to join Altman in the transition.

The reinstatement of Altman reflects OpenAI’s dedication to reestablishing stability and effective governance, as emphasised by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. OpenAI’s flagship product, ChatGPT, an advanced language-based chatbot, has achieved significant popularity since its public release in November 2022, accumulating over 100 million monthly users in less than a year.
