Antony Loewenstein’s new book “The Palestine Laboratory” uncovers Israel’s use of Palestinian territories as a testing ground for weapons and surveillance technologies before selling them internationally. The book sheds light on the close ties between Israel’s arms industry and its oppressive treatment of Palestinians.
Loewenstein, an award-winning journalist, spent several years reporting on Israeli repression in the West Bank and Gaza. His experiences led him to critically examine his Zionist upbringing and question the narrative of fear that underpinned it.
“The Palestine Laboratory” details Israel’s testing of rockets, drones, surveillance systems, and other weapons in occupied Palestinian territories, which are then marketed as “battle-tested” to potential buyers worldwide. Israel has become the 10th-largest arms exporter, with sales reaching US$12.5 billion last year.
The book outlines Israel’s history of selling weapons to repressive regimes, including those in Latin America, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. It also exposes how Israel has supplied mass surveillance technologies tested on Palestinians to various countries, where they are used to monitor populations and oppressed minorities.
Highlighting Israel’s commitment to arming brutal regimes, “The Palestine Laboratory” raises concerns about the widespread impact of Israeli weapons and surveillance technologies on human rights around the world. The book warns of the dangers of normalising Israel’s occupation and the need for sustained grassroots resistance to pressure governments and institutions to end their ties with Israeli arms companies.
