The recent 7th Public Lecture held at Corona College of Education highlighted the importance of integrating entrepreneurship into the nation’s educational system. The lecture, entitled ‘ The Future of Education and Entrepreneurship in Nigeria: Trends and Predictions’, underscored the critical role of entrepreneurship in shaping the future landscape of education in Nigeria.

The event, presided over by the Chairman of the occasion, Professor Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, and represented by Dr. Tayo Modupe Kayode-Isola, Director, NCE Programmes LASUED, provided an insightful platform for discussions on the intersection of education and entrepreneurship.

The Guest lecturer, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, founder and CEO of The Chair Centre Group and former Chairman, First Bank of Nigeria, emphasised the importance of introducing effective entrepreneurship programmes into the early academic curricula. She advocated for the inclusion of entrepreneurial education from primary school, envisioning it as a means to equip Nigerian graduates with the skills necessary for job creation.

Awosika also highlighted the significant role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in job creation and stressed the importance of establishing efficient value chains to drive innovation and sector-wide growth. She underscored the transformative impact of aligning entrepreneurship development with Nigeria’s educational framework and urged the cultivation of a problem-solving mindset with commercial value from the grassroots level.

Furthermore, she challenged the traditional belief that a university education is the only path to entrepreneurship, emphasising the importance of diverse technical skills for enterprise development after primary or secondary education. Drawing from her experience, she articulated the essence of entrepreneurship as a means to offer viable solutions to societal challenges.

Dr. Olajumoke Mekiliuwa, the Provost of Corona College of Education, also underlined the importance of reviving technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a crucial mechanism to reshape Nigeria’s educational landscape and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills.

The 7th Public Lecture at Corona College of Education provided valuable insights into the transformative potential of synergising education and entrepreneurship for sustainable economic growth in Nigeria. The discussions at the event shed light on the need to integrate entrepreneurship into the Nigerian educational system, starting from the grassroots level, to shape a new generation of graduates who are equipped with the skills needed to drive economic development.

In conclusion, the intersection of education and entrepreneurship is crucial for Nigeria’s future, and the insights shared at the public lecture have paved the way for meaningful discussions and actions in this direction.
