Sarada Vihar, a well-known ‘tharavadu’ in Thrissur, has undergone a stunning renovation that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. The 70-year-old house has been carefully restored, paying homage to its heritage while embracing contemporary design principles.
One of the main challenges faced during the renovation was the accumulation of dust from the nearby main road. To address this, the height of the compound wall was increased and bamboo trees were strategically planted along the perimeter, creating a natural barrier. Additionally, the outdoor space was thoughtfully landscaped with resilient plants like calathea, effectively reducing dust and noise intrusion.
The exterior of the house is a delightful fusion of old-world charm and modern sophistication. The use of Fundermax cladding panels and extensive laterite panelling lends a wood-like finish to the main gate and compound walls. The house features a cantilever-style box, elegant Louvre windows, and an enchanting tiled roof, creating a captivating visual composition.
Perhaps the most captivating feature of this renovated ‘tharavadu’ is its verdant courtyard, accessible from both the residence and the porch. The traditional ‘Tulasi thara’ adds a touch of timeless elegance to this charming space, evoking a sense of nostalgia and heritage.
The interior of the 3100-square-foot home is a harmonious blend of old-world allure and modern comfort. The lower level comprises a porch, living area, dining space, kitchen, sitout, courtyard, work area, and two bedrooms, while the upper level houses three more bedrooms and a delightful balcony.
The living room is a showcase of timeless elegance, adorned with carefully refurbished antique furniture. Framed photos adorn the walls, adding to the sophisticated ambiance. The living and dining areas seamlessly connect via a dry courtyard and a connecting passage, creating a fluid transition between spaces.
The bedrooms are adorned with meticulously polished antique furniture, giving the impression that the house has retained its original character and charm. The renovation has successfully preserved the timeless appeal of the ‘tharavadu’ while integrating modern conveniences.
