The inaugural opening of the Christabel Pankhurst Institute for Health Technology and Innovation is a momentous occasion that signifies a significant advancement in healthcare solutions. The unveiling of this cutting-edge flagship building, located within The University of Manchester’s campus on the Oxford Road Corridor, demonstrates the university’s dedication to harnessing technology and innovation for the improvement of individuals and communities.
Established in 2021 as part of the Greater Manchester (GM) Local Industrial Strategy, the institute is designed to strengthen the city-region’s capabilities in the field of health and care. During the inauguration event, President and Vice-Chancellor Nancy Rothwell emphasized the institute’s commitment to driving technological research breakthroughs and enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals with diverse health and care needs.
The institute’s strategic location and collaborative partnerships with the NHS, researchers, and industry are positioned to support business growth and promote world-leading research and innovation. The presence of the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, at the opening event underscored the significant impact of this new establishment and its potential to enhance the city’s reputation as a centre for health innovation.
In addition to the flagship building, a gallery was revealed on the ground floor, showcasing the rich history of Dover Street and the surrounding area. The gallery’s presentation highlighted the building’s sustainable and collaborative design.
The event also welcomed Professor Helen Pankhurst CBE, a women’s rights activist and senior advisor at CARE International, who expressed her pride in unveiling the plaque commemorating her great-aunt Christabel Pankhurst’s life and works, for whom the institute is named. Her poignant words underscored the enduring link between the Pankhurst family and Manchester, reflecting a connection that continues to flourish over time.
Professor Alejandro Frangi FREng, Director of the Pankhurst Institute, outlined the institute’s vision to establish Greater Manchester as a vibrant and well-connected innovation-driven health tech ecosystem. He emphasized the university’s pivotal role in providing thought leadership and fostering breakthroughs in healthcare, aligning with the region’s history of pioneering advancements in this field.
