The inaugural event for the East Midlands Institute of Technology (EMIoT) has recently occurred at the Derby College Group’s Roundhouse Campus. This pioneering institute, a collaborative venture involving the Derby College Group, the University of Derby, Loughborough College, and Loughborough University, is dedicated to providing research-driven, employer-led learning facilities. EMIoT will offer cutting-edge classrooms and collaborative workspaces, with a focus on delivering a hands-on learning experience for students.
Ellis Boyall, the current site manager for Davlyn Construction and a former student at DCG, has returned to oversee the development of the IoT at the Roundhouse site. Reflecting on his experience, Boyall expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I had the privilege of studying at the college in 2009 and 2014, and it’s incredibly rewarding to apply the skills I acquired at DCG to contribute to the college’s growth. DCG has been instrumental in shaping my career, and being involved in the construction of the IoT is particularly thrilling as it will play a pivotal role in shaping the future career paths of aspiring learners. I also aspire to inspire others to explore opportunities in the construction industry.”
Additionally, Joe Charles, the construction director of Davlyn Construction, praised Boyall’s capability, affirming, “Ellis was the natural choice to lead the IoT build at the Roundhouse. His adept problem-solving skills and exceptional leadership make him an asset to the project. Collaborating with DCG on this construction project has been a delight, and we eagerly anticipate the completion of this cutting-edge facility in less than a year.”
In addition to its academic collaborations, EMIoT has established strategic partnerships with renowned global employers such as Rolls-Royce, Uniper, Toyota, National Grid ESO, Alstom, Fujitsu, and Bloc Digital.
Kate Martin, the deputy principal of DCG, underscored the significance of the Institute of Technology, stating, “This new facility represents a defining moment in the educational landscape at DCG. This institute will not only address the escalating demand for skilled professionals in the technology sector but will also serve as a nucleus for fostering innovation, cooperation, and industry alliances. By fostering collaboration between the further education (FE) and higher education (HE) sectors, the development of EMIoT will expand opportunities for individuals seeking career advancement, whether they are mid-career professionals looking to retrain or upskill or young entrants into the workforce.”
The EMIoT is projected to commence operations in August 2024, welcoming a vibrant academic community comprising 2,000 learners by the academic year 2027.
