Hanwha Ocean Co., a prominent maritime technology company based in South Korea, has recently entered into a contract with the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT) for the “Research and Development of Design Technology for New-type Demagnetizing Equipment for Submarines.” This sophisticated demagnetizing equipment aims to diminish the magnetic field emitted by submarines, thereby increasing stealth and reducing the likelihood of detection by adversaries. The company’s research efforts are scheduled to continue until May 2028, with the ultimate goal of producing prototypes for performance validation.
The innovative demagnetizing equipment will bolster the stealth capabilities of submarines through the development of demagnetizing coils, control units, power supply units, and magnetic sensor design technology. This advancement solidifies Hanwha Ocean’s standing as a leader in the naval technology sector.
In addition to the aforementioned project, Hanwha Ocean is also venturing into the “Unmanned Submersible Energy Source System” project, a part of the National Defense Research Institute’s inaugural initiative. The project entails the creation of a hydrogen fuel cell system for use in a multi-purpose modular unmanned submersible, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation and progress in maritime defence technology.
Having an impressive track record of constructing submarines for the South Korean Navy, including the notable Jangbogo-I, Jangbogo-II, and the new 3,000-ton-class Jangbogo-III, Hanwha Ocean has cemented its status as a major player in the industry. Notably, the company has successfully exported six submarines to Indonesia, a significant achievement as the first domestic company to do so.
As Hanwha Ocean looks towards the future, it is contemplating entry into the global maritime defence market, leveraging its expertise and technological capabilities for further growth and innovation. This strategic move has the potential to open up new opportunities for the company, particularly in regions such as the United States and Europe.
In addition to its pioneering research and development endeavours, Hanwha Ocean has been making significant strides in the shipping and shipbuilding sector. The company recently secured a $125.5 million order for VLAC (very large crude carriers) and secured the world’s largest order for ammonia carriers. These accomplishments further reinforce Hanwha Ocean’s position as a prominent player in the maritime industry.
