Toyo, the foremost expert in measurement, has recently garnered attention for its acquisition of Rototest, a Swedish developer of hub-coupled powertrain dynamometers. This strategic move represents a significant milestone for Toyo, as it enables the company to expand its innovative automotive test solutions to a wider array of manufacturers.
The collaboration between Toyo and Rototest was established in 2016, at which time Toyo successfully introduced Rototest’s hub-coupled dynamometer technology to the Japanese automotive market. This technology was widely embraced due to its rapid setup, user-friendly design, and portability. Leveraging this success, Toyo has broadened its dynamometer offerings to encompass radar and camera simulators, leading to the creation of the Driving & Motion Test System (DMTS). This comprehensive system facilitates the assessment of various functions and enables simulated indoor testing that accurately reflects real-world conditions.
In a significant development, Toyo will be delivering a DMTS to the Japan Automobile Research Institute in December 2023, to support its Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing requirements. Meanwhile, Toyo’s US subsidiary, ToyoTech, has secured an order for two Rototest dynamometer systems to support a major automotive manufacturer’s electric vehicle initiatives.
Additionally, Toyo has unveiled a vehicle-in-the-loop solution anchored by Rototest dynamometers. Christian Engström, CEO of Rototest, has expressed optimism about the acquisition, emphasizing the potential for Rototest to enhance its automotive test solutions with the backing of Toyo.
The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation due to the emergence of electric vehicle technology, autonomous driving, ADAS, and connected cars. According to the analysis firm IndustryARC, the global market for automotive dynos is projected to reach US$1.1615bn by 2027, up from US$928.1m in 2021. This growth trajectory is indicative of the evolving landscape of the automotive sector and the growing demand for advanced testing solutions.
