Karl Lagerfeld’s iconic 7L bookstore in Paris, which served as his photo studio, is currently undergoing a transformation following the passing of the esteemed designer in 2019. The space, previously reserved for fashion photo shoots, is now being reimagined as a hub for cultural events, performances, exhibitions, and book-related activities.
The newly appointed director of 7L, Laurence Delamare, has underscored the objective of reintroducing creativity into the space, with the aim of establishing it as a flourishing cultural centre while upholding Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy. Having previously worked closely with Lagerfeld at Chanel, Delamare is dedicated to preserving the designer’s diverse taste and fervour for literature, art, and photography.
The redesign encompasses an extensive cultural programme, now accessible via subscription, featuring events such as dance performances, musical acts, and book signings. The bookstore has also launched an Instagram account, enhanced its website, and recommenced online sales. Furthermore, 7L is venturing into publishing and is poised to release new books in the coming years, in collaboration with various publishers to broaden its offerings.
For aficionados of the unique book selection at 7L, the bookstore has introduced a personalised library service, enabling clients to curate collections tailored to their interests or decor. Additionally, 7L now offers “book boxes” as bespoke holiday gifts, containing a selection of books, stationery, and exclusive numbered artworks.
The reinvigorated 7L has already commenced hosting book signings and intends to welcome renowned figures such as fashion illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme and fashion editor Carine Roitfeld. The space will also introduce a membership programme, affording access to live contemporary creation events, reading room programmes, and exhibitions. Members will enjoy benefits such as discounts on books, preferential rates for event spaces, and access to exclusive encounters with contemporary figures.
Delamare’s vision for 7L seeks to craft a space that remains an inspiration for artists, authors, and publishing houses, while staying pertinent and forward-thinking. The objective is to perpetuate Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy by continuing to host creative events and collaborations with contemporary artists and intellectuals.
The renaissance of 7L is a tribute to Lagerfeld’s ardour for literature, art, and culture, aiming to uphold the space as a lively, convivial, and joyous environment for book enthusiasts and innovative minds. The transformation of this iconic venue serves as a testimony to the enduring influence of Karl Lagerfeld and his commitment to nurturing creativity in all its manifestations.
