New Funding to Provide Winter Support for Vulnerable Communities in the UK

The Cadent Foundation has recently announced the introduction of its Winter Support Fund, a new programme aimed at delivering essential financial aid to communities throughout the United Kingdom. With a budget of £2 million, the fund is intended to provide much-needed assistance for energy and food to individuals living in vulnerable circumstances during the winter season. This financial support will be distributed through the foundation’s charitable partners, including Citizens Advice, Groundwork UK, and Trussell Trust.

The launch of this Winter Support Fund comes at a time of growing need across the nation, with recent research revealing that a significant number of UK adults are struggling to cover their household expenses. The fund is designed to offer swift access to additional financial resources for charities that provide energy and financial guidance, enabling them to have an immediate impact on those in need.

Ranjit Blythe, Managing Director of the Cadent Foundation, stressed the significance of this initiative in addressing fuel poverty. He highlighted the strong relationships with charities that provide energy efficiency and financial management advice, recognizing the impact of their work in driving lasting change. However, Blythe also acknowledged the dire situations faced by many individuals in vulnerable circumstances, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges of living costs.

The fund aims to empower charitable partners to make a direct financial impact on people in need, especially as the number of individuals living in fuel poverty is estimated to be 6.3 million. While the fund may not offer a long-term solution to this issue, it aims to ease some of the immediate financial burdens faced by vulnerable households during the winter months.

Concerning access to the support, food and energy vouchers will be provided to individuals supported by Cadent Foundations’ charitable partners, including the Trussell Trust and Citizens Advice. The funding will be available from December to March, with the potential to support thousands of homes in areas of high deprivation. Each household can receive up to two vouchers, with the option of also receiving up to £100 to spend on essential heating and cooking appliances, such as heated blankets, slow cookers, and air fryers.

Gillian Cooper, Director of Energy at Citizens Advice, underscored the importance of being able to provide vouchers to people facing immediate hardship. This support will enable some individuals to access essential electrical goods and prevent others from having to make the difficult choice between heating, eating, or keeping the lights on.
