The students at Inverclyde Academy have demonstrated their impressive capabilities in the field of finance by making it to the final of a prestigious national competition.
The Scotland’s Investment Challenge has provided an excellent platform for S5/S6 pupils to exhibit their financial expertise by collaboratively managing a virtual investment fund. This has necessitated the students to apply their skills in decision-making based on thorough research and current events.
Their triumph in the competition has secured them a place in the regional final, where they will compete against students from Bearsden Academy and Mearns Castle High School.
Laura Wilson, the Financial Services Sector Manager at Skills Development Scotland, has expressed her enthusiasm for the competition, highlighting the opportunity it offers for young individuals to gain insight into potential career paths in the financial services industry. She has also emphasized the importance of meta-skills such as critical thinking and communication, which the competition helps to cultivate.
The competition, which involved a total of 1,100 pupils from 26 schools, utilized the online business simulation Finance Lab. Volunteers from BNP Paribas also played a crucial role, visiting schools to engage with teachers and students, and enlightening them about the various opportunities within the sector.
Mark Daisley, head of client delivery for BNP Paribas, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of promoting the diverse range of careers within the financial services sector. He also expressed anticipation in welcoming the students to BNP Paribas for the final round.
The competition, sponsored by the Securities Services business of BNP Paribas in collaboration with Skills Development Scotland and Global Investor Simulations, aligns with the Developing the Young Workforce strategy. It forms an integral part of SDS’s Skills Investment Plan for Scotland’s Financial Services sector, aimed at providing engaging experiences and enhancing exposure to the world of work for pupils.
The support of BNP Paribas has been instrumental in ensuring the success of the competition. By connecting young individuals with employers, it has opened up opportunities for them to explore their future career pathways.
In conclusion, the accomplishments of the Inverclyde Academy students in the Scotland’s Investment Challenge have not only demonstrated their financial prowess but have also underscored the value of initiatives that bridge the gap between education and industry. As they prepare for the regional finals, their journey serves as a testament to the potential of young individuals in carving out successful careers in the financial services sector.
