The Rise of Gen Z Entrepreneurs

3 min read

In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in Generation Z individuals opting for entrepreneurship as a career choice. A diverse range of ventures, from fashion to beauty, are now being pursued by this generation. According to a report from Square Future of Commerce, 54 percent of Gen Z consumers surveyed have expressed an interest in starting their own businesses. This has raised curiosity about the driving forces behind their departure from the traditional 9-5 lifestyle in favour of entrepreneurship.

One prime example of this trend is Teonna Daniels, a 22-year-old photographer from Indianapolis. While currently working in a traditional 9-5 job alongside her own business, her ultimate ambition is to become her own boss. Daniels draws inspiration from her family, particularly her grandfather, who has been a lifelong entrepreneur. Her passion for photography began unexpectedly when she was asked to take a student’s senior photos, leading her to discover her true calling.

Another individual, Jaden Payne, the owner of JL the Label, also chose the road less travelled by pursuing a career in business. Despite initially aspiring for a dental career, she found her true passion in her clothing business. “I just didn’t feel like it was fulfilling my purpose,” Payne reflects on her time at the dental office. Her business allowed her to witness the impact of her work on others, and she realized, “I’m making people happy. People really love what I do.”

Both Daniels and Payne believe that taking risks is an essential part of the entrepreneurial journey. “When it comes to risk taking as an entrepreneur, you just got to do it. You’re going to fall, but it’s all about how you get up and recover that makes it worthwhile,” expresses Daniels. Payne echoes this sentiment, stating, “Sometimes, you have to take risks and trust yourself. I don’t feel like any risk is a bad risk.”

These women serve as inspiring examples of the intersection between traditional work and entrepreneurship. With their different paths, both have set their sights on achieving success as business owners while motivating others around them.

In conclusion, the stories of Daniels and Payne underscore the growing trend of Gen Z individuals choosing entrepreneurship over traditional career paths. By following their passions and taking calculated risks, they are carving out their own unique successes. As more individuals from this generation pursue entrepreneurship, it will be intriguing to see the impact they have on the business landscape.
