Google’s Bard Chatbot: Test-Driving the New Gemini Pro Upgrade for Travel

3 min read

Google has recently introduced an enhanced iteration of its AI technology, labelled as Gemini Pro, which has supplanted its former chatbot technology, Bard. As per Google, Gemini Pro has outperformed the previous GPT-3.5 model in six out of eight industry-standard benchmarks, showcasing superior capabilities in understanding, summarizing, reasoning, coding, and planning.

Despite this accomplishment, users have expressed apprehensions regarding significant errors in certain responses provided by Bard to straightforward questions. Nevertheless, the technology giant asserts the updates allowing Bard to access real-time data through Google products such as Maps, Flights, Hotels, YouTube, and Workspace.

An evaluation of this new technology within the realm of travel has yielded the following findings:

Summarising YouTube Travel Videos: The chatbot has proven itself useful in summarizing videos from YouTube influencers, aiding users in decision-making regarding which videos to watch. However, a glitch has been noted when clicking on video links, leading to ads rather than the main video.

Itinerary Creation: The chatbot was successful in generating an itinerary for a trip to New York City, featuring notable points of interest. Although lacking in links to the mentioned places, it provides a solid foundation for trip planning.

Flights and Hotels: Bard accurately presented flight options from Raleigh to New York City and hotel options for a weeklong trip. However, it initially provided roundtrip flight options for a weeklong trip when hotel options for three nights were requested. After clarification, it rectified the error and presented the correct options.

Restaurants: Despite the absence of a specific restaurant extension, the chatbot can suggest restaurants and more through the Maps extension. It is imperative to specify the location for more accurate responses.

Accessing Email for Flight Confirmations: A notable feature of the upgrade is the capability to access flight confirmation details from the user’s Gmail account upon request. However, users must explicitly request the chatbot to check emails for this information.

Travel Sales Content Creation: Bard was able to provide drafts for an Airbnb listing, albeit making unsolicited assumptions. Nevertheless, it can serve as a valuable tool for generating copy, particularly for individuals facing challenges in writing.

Overall, the new upgrade, Gemini Pro, has demonstrated advancements in addressing various travel-related tasks. While limitations persist, it exhibits substantial potential in aiding users with trip planning and real-time information access.

In conclusion, Google’s latest AI upgrade for Bard has yielded promising results within the travel sector, and we eagerly anticipate further advancements in the future.
