Johns Hopkins University has paid tribute to the late Pava LePere, a former student and tech CEO who tragically lost her life in September of last year. During a special celebration of her life over the weekend, the institution announced that the Fast Forward U will be renamed as the Pava Marie LePere Center for Entrepreneurship at Johns Hopkins University.
In attendance at the event was Governor Wes Moore, who spoke eloquently about the impact that LePere had on those around her. “It wasn’t just her accomplishments that were so beautiful and so extraordinary, it really was her mindset,” said Governor Moore, highlighting LePere’s entrepreneurial spirit and positive outlook.
Mayor Brandon Scott also paid his respects to his late friend, describing Pava as a source of inspiration and a beloved member of the community. “Today we are here to celebrate the life of Pava, who was my friend,” Mayor Scott remarked, further underscoring the profound impact that she had on those who knew her.
Tragically, Pava LePere’s life was cut short when she was killed in her Mount Vernon apartment by Jason Billingsley, a convicted sex offender who had been released from prison early for good behavior. Prosecutors revealed that Billingsley had committed a heinous act just days before taking LePere’s life, having raped a woman in her home and set the house on fire.
The details of the crime are harrowing, with charging documents outlining how Billingsley was captured on surveillance footage entering the building where LePere lived and then boarding an elevator. To add to the horror, LePere’s body was discovered on a rooftop several days after she was believed to have been killed, adding to the shock and devastation felt by her loved ones and the wider community.
The tragic events surrounding Pava LePere’s death have raised serious questions about the justice system and the monitoring of repeat offenders. The case has sparked a debate about legislation targeting individuals with a history of violent crimes, prompting calls for greater oversight and accountability in the release and rehabilitation of such offenders.
The decision by Johns Hopkins to rename the Fast Forward U in honour of Pava LePere is a fitting tribute to her legacy and the impact that she had on the university and the wider entrepreneurial community. It serves as a testament to her drive, innovation, and determination to make a positive difference in the world, and ensures that her memory will continue to inspire future generations of students and innovators.
As the community continues to mourn the loss of Pava LePere, her remarkable spirit and the lasting impact of her achievements will be cherished and celebrated, ensuring that her legacy endures for years to come.
