The grand opening of the very first Pret a Manger store in Belfast took place today, much to the excitement of fans of the popular chain. Despite the overcast weather, a substantial crowd gathered at Donegall Square West to partake in the eagerly anticipated event. The sleek and modern store, situated on the former site of a Patisserie Valerie, represents Pret’s most recent addition to its UK-wide food chain.
Among the enthusiastic attendees were Tina and Davy Grimsley, who journeyed from Enniskillen to Belfast for the occasion. The couple, ardent fans of Pret, lauded the chain for its “handmade and fresh” food, emphasizing its quality as the reason behind its immense popularity. Another devoted fan, Basil Hutton, was also present at the store opening, expressing his delight at the ample seating available and praising the store’s convenient location near a bus stop.
Additionally, Lisa Hickson, a Belfast-based professional, anticipated that the new store would resonate well with office workers. However, she acknowledged that prices might be a concern for some locals, as Pret is known for being relatively more expensive.
Nonetheless, not all the news was received with such enthusiasm. The absence of the popular Club Pret subscription for Northern Ireland customers left many attendees disappointed. Students Adam McFarland and Sophie Crumlin expressed their disappointment, as the subscription offers discounted items that are particularly beneficial for students.
In response to the disappointment, a spokesperson for Pret explained that the Club Pret subscription is currently unavailable in Northern Ireland, but assured customers that it would be considered as the chain expands in the future. The subscription, offering up to five barista-made hot drinks a day and a 20% discount on the entire menu for just £30 a month, with the first month costing only £15, is not only unavailable in Northern Ireland, but also in the four Pret stores in Dublin.
Furthermore, some customers were also disheartened to discover that certain popular menu items were absent at the new Belfast store. An official statement from Pret addressed this concern, elucidating that the availability of menu items is primarily based on customer demand and preference, and assured customers that the menu will be continuously updated and monitored.
The opening of the new Pret store in Belfast has undoubtedly generated a surge of excitement and enthusiasm among fans of the brand. It remains to be seen whether the chain will contemplate introducing the Club Pret subscription and additional menu items in Northern Ireland in the near future.
