Renesas Electronics Corporation has introduced a groundbreaking cloud-based development environment aimed at streamlining the software design process for automotive AI engineers. The newly launched platform, AI Workbench, provides an integrated virtual development environment that enables automotive engineers to design, simulate, and perfect their automotive software within the cloud.
By making use of Microsoft Azure services, including Azure Compute, IaaS services, Microsoft Entra ID, and Azure Security, engineers can seamlessly initiate the design of automotive software without the need to install tools on a PC or acquire an evaluation board. This approach is in line with the “Shift-Left” approach, allowing software creation and testing to occur earlier in the design cycle, even before the actual hardware is available.
Mandali Khalesi, Global VP, HPC AI and Cloud Technology at Renesas, stated, “We are introducing a cloud-based virtual development and AI model performance testing environment for automotive engineers in collaboration with Microsoft, a leading cloud technology provider. We are dedicated to enhancing the AI development environment through new features such as continuous monitoring and analysis of software usage.”
The AI Workbench will function as a unified development platform for designing and testing Renesas’ scalable automotive SoCs and MCUs, regardless of product type or application. This cloud-based development environment has been praised as a secure and cost-effective solution to tackle the increasing complexities of today’s embedded projects, by Ulrich Homann, Corporate Vice President and Distinguished Architect, Cloud + AI, Microsoft.
This innovative platform includes various functional blocks such as an upgraded compiler toolchain, model performance testing environment, automotive software development environment, and software evaluation/verification environment. Moreover, Renesas intends to expand its offering in the future with additional features tailored to support various development processes.
The AI Workbench is set to be available in limited preview from January 2024, with plans to broaden availability from Q2 2024 and develop similar environments for other major cloud services in the future. In addition to the collaboration with Microsoft, Renesas also aims to integrate tools provided by partners of the R-Car Consortium into the cloud environment for enhanced efficiency.
