The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, recently conveyed a resolute commitment towards harnessing the potential of technology to enhance the effectiveness of the agency.
During the NCS annual conference, Adeniyi articulated the necessity for more sophisticated data analytics and digital technologies to streamline operations and enhance decision-making. He underscored the crucial role of innovation in fulfilling the agency’s trade oversight objectives amidst the continuously evolving global dynamics.
Adeniyi remarked, “In order to advance progress, efficiency, and strategic planning within Customs administration, data serves as the indispensable groundwork for improved decision-making, ensuring operational accuracy, and fostering a dedication to excellence.” His statements underlined the significance of utilising data to steer well-informed and effective decision-making processes.
Aligned with his dedication to technological advancement, Adeniyi detailed several key initiatives aimed at integrating predictive data tools, machine learning, and AI into Customs operations. He believes that these technologies will significantly contribute to enhancing proactive risk management, detecting fraud, and facilitating trade. Through the adoption of such cutting-edge tools, the NCS seeks to modernise its operations and attain superior efficiency.
The keynote address at the conference was delivered by retired Deputy Comptroller General, Manassah Jatau. He lauded the NCS for its forward-thinking approach in embracing new technologies over the years. Jatau stressed the importance of adaptability, expressing, “Those who are unable to change their minds are unable to change their heads.” His words underscored the imperative for officers to embrace change and consistently evolve in response to technological advancements.
Reflecting on past reforms that have propelled growth within the NCS, retired Assistant Comptroller General Kofo Olugbeson underscored the necessity for the service to address emerging challenges through sustained reforms, technology integration, and international collaboration. She emphasized that global trade is perpetually evolving, and the NCS must proactively adapt to these changes to ensure effective oversight and facilitation of trade.
