In a recent development, Chinese technology giant Huawei has finalized an agreement with a ministry in Thailand to establish the country as a regional centre for artificial intelligence (AI). The memorandum of understanding was signed during the Huawei Cloud AI Summit Thailand 2023 in Bangkok, with the goal of strengthening AI development, industry applications, ecosystem development, and talent cultivation in the Southeast Asian nation.
The collaboration between Huawei and the ministry is expected to play a crucial role in advancing Thailand as a regional AI hub through the implementation of digital transformation and smart city strategies. As cloud technology emerges as a key driver for the country’s growth, Thailand’s Digital Economy and Society Minister, Prasert Chanthararuangthong, emphasised the ministry’s commitment to prioritising cloud technology to enhance the country’s digital ecosystem for cloud and AI technology.
During the summit, Minister Chanthararuangthong commended Huawei for bringing its global advanced expertise to Thailand, laying the groundwork for the country’s digital transformation. The ministry has pledged its full support to accelerate digital transformation, foster talent, achieve economic sustainability, and improve the overall quality of life for the citizens of Thailand. The partnership with private sectors, particularly Huawei, aims to position Thailand as a regional AI powerhouse.
According to the Office of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission, Thailand’s digital industry is projected to contribute as much as 30 percent to the GDP by 2027. As part of this ambitious goal, the country will focus on promoting cloud-based infrastructure under the “Go Cloud First” policy, allowing both domestic and international cloud providers to establish their infrastructure in Thailand. Notable providers include INET, AWS, Microsoft, and Huawei.
During the summit, Huawei showcased a suite of cutting-edge AI solutions and models tailored to meet Thailand’s specific needs, such as language models, meteorology solutions, and AI applications for the finance and retail sectors. In particular, the AI language model, trained on the Thai corpus, enables the country to shift from being an AI user to a creator, breaking down language barriers in the process.
Furthermore, Huawei’s collaboration with the Thai Meteorological Department resulted in the development of a Pangu weather model, paving the way for advanced weather predictions crucial to industries such as agriculture and tourism. The model can forecast the trajectory of a typhoon 10 days in advance, significantly reducing the time needed for predictions from hours to seconds.
At the summit, Huawei Thailand CEO Li Xiongwei reiterated the company’s commitment to building a strong digital foundation and AI infrastructure for the government and enterprises. Huawei aims to empower Thailand to harness the transformative power of AI, leading to a proliferation of AI applications across various industries, ultimately benefiting the Thai people and driving the country’s digital progress.
Looking ahead, Huawei has announced its plans to train 10,000 digital power engineers and 20,000 cloud developers over the next three years.
