The American Psychological Association (APA) has partnered with the Consumer Technology Association® (CTA) to launch a novel programming track known as Psytech at CES 2024. This concerted effort is geared towards illuminating the juncture of psychological science and its impact on technology, particularly at the CTA’s annual Consumer Electronics Show, slated for January 9–12, 2024, in Las Vegas.
The field of psychology, being the study of human behaviour, is of paramount importance in propelling technological advancements. Scholars in the realm of psychology are actively engaged in various facets of technology innovation, encompassing human-computer interaction, user experience, and the deployment of learning science in educational technology products. The forthcoming PsyTech sessions at CES are set to spotlight the influence of ethical and equitable psychological research on product development, consumer acceptance, and innovation.
Notably, Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, the CEO of APA, underscored the substantive role of psychology in the advancement of digital technologies for human health and well-being. Equally significant, the session “Social Media’s Impact on Kids: What’s Next for Tech?” will proffer a science-grounded roadmap for industry leaders to augment the positive repercussions of social media and ensure the safety of children in the digital sphere.
Furthermore, the session “Making Digital Interventions Accessible and Affordable” will delve into the collaboration between experts in behavioural health treatments and the technology industry to render evidence-based digital treatments more accessible. Lastly, “Your Brain Gaming for Good” will present the latest findings on games associated with enhancements to human performance and discuss the development of games that promote positive behaviours and prevent violence.
In tandem with these sessions, APA will also co-sponsor the Digital Health Mixer at CES, affording attendees and media the opportunity to engage with digital health leaders and glean insights into the latest developments in the digital health sphere. As part of its commitment to knowledge dissemination, APA will make video recordings of the sessions available online a few weeks after the show, ensuring that the discussions reach a wider audience beyond the event attendees.
