The Crucial Role of Young People in Shaping a Sustainable Future, According to Experts

The issue of climate change has assumed a prominent position in global discourse in recent years, and experts are now emphasizing the crucial role of young people in driving efforts towards a sustainable future. Clean technology, also referred to as cleantech or climatetech, has been identified as a pivotal player in this narrative, aiming to mitigate negative environmental impacts through energy efficiency, sustainable resource utilization, and environmental protection.

Cleantech encompasses a wide array of technologies and innovations that are specifically designed to address environmental challenges and promote sustainability across diverse sectors such as energy, transportation, water, and waste management. These technologies are indispensable in combatting climate change and decreasing the world’s dependence on fossil fuels, which are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution.

Experts have underscored the importance of raising awareness and providing funding for clean technologies. Saurabh Kumar, Vice President – India of Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), has underscored the significance of cleantech awareness in transitioning away from conventional fuels and ensuring a sustainable energy future. He has also highlighted the challenge of funding in the cleantech sector, attributing it to the perceived risks and lengthy gestation period of ventures.

Sandeep Chandna, Chief Sustainability Officer at Tech Mahindra, has drawn attention to the intricate relationship between technology and climate change, asserting that technology plays a critical role in guiding us towards a sustainable future. He has emphasized the integration of technology in sustainable management, highlighting the diverse ways in which technology has been leveraged to address the challenges of climate change, from AI-powered energy optimization systems to IoT devices that monitor environmental metrics.

Cleantech encompasses a wide range of solutions, including renewable energy, smart grids, and carbon capture, all aimed at curbing carbon emissions and fostering a greener planet. Reports have revealed that the global cleantech market is projected to grow significantly, reaching approximately USD 650 billion per year by 2030. Additionally, cleantech-related jobs are expected to double from six million to nearly 14 million by the same year.

Investing in clean technologies is essential for promoting sustainable practices and creating a brighter future for all. This entails a collaborative effort from governments, businesses, and individuals to expedite the adoption of cleantech solutions. The role of young innovators, in particular, has been acknowledged as pivotal in driving innovative approaches for sustainability.

GEAPP’s ENTICE – Energy Transitions Innovation Challenge, seeks to nurture an ecosystem for innovators in India and accelerate progress towards Sustainable Development Goals by encouraging the development of low-cost, impactful, and scalable clean energy solutions. The programme offers access to Series ‘A’ funding, market linkages, and mentorship to support innovators in the cleantech space.

As the landscape of climate action evolves, it is evident that young people and innovative technological solutions will play an indispensable role in paving the way for a sustainable and resilient future. With sustained support and investment in clean technologies, the strides towards a sustainable future will only continue to expand.
