Technology is designed to streamline and simplify our lives, however, recent research suggests that it may be having the opposite effect. A study conducted with 300 participants across Europe revealed that individuals are increasingly filling their free time with digital tasks in order to avoid periods of idleness, leading to a significant shift in the perception of leisure time.
The incessant need to occupy every moment of free time with various activities has led to the replacement of traditional forms of relaxation and contemplation with digital engagements such as brain training apps and social media-related list-making. This shift has resulted in individuals feeling compelled to multitask and constantly seek out a more idealised lifestyle online, rather than simply enjoying activities such as dining, watching television, or engaging in exercise classes.
Despite the argument that tasks like online banking may save time, research has shown that technology is actually contributing to a busier and more overwhelming lifestyle. In addition to personal time, technology is also impacting the way we work, with the blurring of boundaries between professional and personal time leading to increased stress, exhaustion, and burnout, ultimately resulting in higher rates of absenteeism from work.
In order to counteract the overwhelming influence of technology on our leisure and professional lives, it is essential to begin normalising the act of disconnecting from technology in the workplace and establishing realistic expectations regarding work hours and productivity. Furthermore, legislative measures, such as the right to disconnect, as observed in various European countries, may be necessary to safeguard individuals from the overbearing impact of technology.
Ultimately, technology itself may offer a solution to reclaiming our free time. For instance, implementing features in smart devices that prompt individuals to cease work after completing their designated hours, rather than merely encouraging movement, could be a significant step towards regaining lost free time.
