In an exciting new development, Lumo, an agtech company, has announced that Treasury Americas, a division of the global wine company Treasury Wine Estates, will be trialling its innovative smart irrigation technology in the vineyards of Napa, California.
The cutting-edge technology developed by Lumo aims to assist growers in effectively managing water in vineyards through automation. This comes as a significant step forward for the industry, given the challenges associated with water usage and fruit quality.
Through this trial, Treasury Wine Estates has deployed 24 of Lumo’s smart irrigation valves to efficiently manage the irrigation of 90 acres of vineyards. Lumo CEO and founder, Devon Wright, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the pivotal role their technology plays in achieving TWE’s ambitious sustainability goals. Wright stated, “Efficient irrigation is paramount in bridging the gap between water usage and the quality of fruit.”
A primary objective of the trial is to generate substantial evidence of how Lumo’s advanced water technology can optimize operational efficiencies while contributing to significant water conservation efforts. Will Drayton, director of sustainability and science at Treasury Americas, highlighted the broader sustainability goals of the project, emphasising the company’s commitment to achieving 100% renewable electricity usage by the end of 2024 and attaining net-zero emissions for Scopes 1 and 2 by 2030. Drayton underlined the significance of the collaboration with Lumo in their pursuit of preserving essential resources for the industry and community.
The integration of Lumo’s smart irrigation technology in the vineyards of Napa signifies a critical step towards the future of sustainable and efficient water management in agriculture. As the wine industry strives to meet increasingly stringent sustainability targets, innovative solutions such as this are undoubtedly vital.
With Lumo’s advanced technology at the forefront, the potential for transformative change in water management in viticulture is substantial. The industry as a whole stands to benefit from the increased operational efficiency and substantial water conservation offered by this pioneering technology.
As the results of this trial begin to unfold, the potential for widespread adoption of smart irrigation technology in vineyards across the globe becomes increasingly promising. The collaboration between Lumo and Treasury Wine Estates marks a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable and efficient water management in viticulture.
