Twelve companies, including prominent automotive manufacturers and leading semiconductor manufacturers, have joined forces to establish the “Advanced SoC Research for Automotive” (ASRA) group on the 1st of December. This consortium’s primary objective is to engage in research and development of high-performance digital semiconductors (System on Chip, SoC) for use in automobiles.
Participating companies, such as Honda, Nissan, Toyota, DENSO CORPORATION, and Renesas Electronics Corporation, seek to pioneer cutting-edge SoC technology for future mass-production vehicles. The integration of these advanced chips into vehicles is projected to begin in 2030.
ASRA acknowledges the pivotal role of SoCs in modern vehicles, particularly in relation to facilitating autonomous driving technology and supporting multimedia systems. Given that approximately 1,000 semiconductors are present in each vehicle, there is a growing demand for state-of-the-art semiconductor technology.
A key emphasis of ASRA will be the adoption of chiplet technology, which involves the utilization of multiple smaller semiconductor “chiplets” to form a single, high-performance SoC. The potential advantages of chiplet technology, such as enhanced performance, increased chip yields, and the improved commercial viability of SoCs tailored to automotive requirements, make it an appealing prospect for the automotive industry.
ASRA aims to leverage the expertise of automotive manufacturers, electrical component manufacturers, and semiconductor companies to bring chiplet technology to fruition by 2028, with the intention of integrating SoCs into mass-produced vehicles in subsequent years. The group also intends to foster collaboration with industry, government, and academia to further advance and promote this cutting-edge technology.
Keiji Yamamoto, a Senior Fellow at Toyota Motor Corporation, has been appointed as the Chairman of ASRA, while Nobuaki Kawahara, a Senior Advisor at DENSO CORPORATION, assumes the role of Executive Director.
The formation of ASRA represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of advanced SoC technology for the automotive industry.
