A recent event held in Luanda, Angola has brought attention to the country’s dedication to improving the entrepreneurial environment. The workshop, titled “1st Methodological meeting on the elaboration of the National Entrepreneurship Policy,” was conducted on 24 February 2023 at the National School of Administration and Public Policy. The event was organized by UNCTAD and the Angolan National Institute for Support to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, as part of the “Train For Trade II” programme funded by the European Union.
The main objective of the workshop was to facilitate a dialogue involving multiple stakeholders that would contribute to the creation of a National Strategy on Entrepreneurship by the Angolan government. It aimed to identify the major challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the country and propose effective solutions to address them.
The discussion revolved around the theme of entrepreneurship and its promotion, based on the UNCTAD Entrepreneurship Policy Framework methodology and its five pillars. These pillars focused on enhancing the regulatory environment, improving education for entrepreneurship and skills development, facilitating technological exchange and innovation, improving access to finance, and promoting awareness and networking.
The workshop saw participation from a diverse range of stakeholders, including officials from various ministries, public institutions, representatives of the private sector and civil society, as well as international organizations such as the European Union, United Nations Development Programme, the International Finance Corporation, and UNCTAD.
With over 50 attendees, including 24 women, the workshop facilitated in-depth discussions and insights. It was emphasized that the event should be considered in conjunction with a report that mapped the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the country, conducted by UNCTAD in 2019. This report was a product of the EU–UNCTAD Joint Programme for Angola: Train for Trade II, with financial backing from the European Union.
This collective effort to address the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in Angola signifies a significant step towards creating a favourable environment for business growth and innovation. By involving diverse stakeholders and leveraging international support, Angola is poised to make substantial progress in entrepreneurship development.
The success of the workshop highlights the commitment of the Angolan government and its partners to drive sustainable economic development through entrepreneurship.
