Tech Innovator from Sri Lanka Recognized in King’s Honours List

Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan, a native of Sri Lanka, has been honoured by the King for his extraordinary contributions to the field of location-tracking technology. As the founder of PervasID, a company based in Cambridge, Dr Sithamparanathan is credited with developing a real-time location tracking system that has been widely adopted by various industries, including NHS trusts, hospitals, aircraft manufacturers, and retailers.

His innovative system, which utilises electromagnetic fields, has proven to be instrumental in tracking surgical instruments within hospitals, ensuring proper decontamination, sterilisation, and availability at the right time and place. Furthermore, retailers have embraced the technology to monitor stock levels and improve click-and-collect services.

In addition to his entrepreneurial achievements, Dr Sithamparanathan has been a vigorous advocate for the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in education, earning him recognition for his dedication to innovative technology and educational enrichment.

Expressing his elation at receiving the prestigious award, Dr Sithamparanathan remarked, “I was absolutely over the moon, thrilled to receive the award. It is a great honour and testament to the hard work and innovation of the entire team.”

Originally hailing from Sri Lanka, Dr Sithamparanathan pursued his higher education at the University of Sheffield before undertaking a PhD at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he conceived his groundbreaking tracking system. His contributions to the academic community were further solidified when he was appointed a research fellow at Girton College in 2011.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr Sithamparanathan acknowledged the pivotal role of the Cambridge community in nurturing his intellectual growth, stating, “I came here as a teenager to pursue higher education. If it was not for Cambridge and the people who mentored me along the way, I would not be where I am today. Cambridge allowed me to exploit possibilities; to maximise potential. I learned from very talented professionals.”

He also emphasised the challenges inherent in translating innovative ideas into practical solutions, remarking, “At the end of the day, innovating is exciting but bringing an idea from the lab to the real world has been a real challenge. On a personal level, it is a dream come true.”

Dr Sabesan Sithamparanathan’s remarkable journey from an ambitious student in Sri Lanka to a pioneer in location-tracking technology serves as an inspiration to aspiring innovators worldwide. His dedication to technological advancement and educational empowerment embodies the spirit of enterprise and intellectual pursuit that is deserving of the highest recognition.
