Global supplier of building materials, Cemex, has recently announced its participation in the HYIELD consortium, which has been awarded a substantial €10 million from the European Union for the development of a Waste to Hydrogen demonstration plant. This innovative project is a response to the Horizon Europe call ‘Waste to Hydrogen demonstration plant (HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2023-01-05)’, led by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (Clean Hydrogen JU).
The main objective of the project is to develop efficient and robust methods for converting biogenic waste streams into high purity green hydrogen, at a competitive cost. Over the span of four years, novel technologies and processes will be integrated to demonstrate the application of green hydrogen in efforts to decarbonise various sectors, such as shipping, aviation, and energy-intensive industry.
The Waste to Hydrogen demonstration plant will be situated at Cemex’s Alcanar cement factory in Spain, where the project aims to process over 2000 tonnes of waste and produce nearly 400 tonnes of green hydrogen. This green hydrogen will then be used in various applications, including clean fuels and fertilizers production.
Sergio Menendez, President of Cemex EMEA, has affirmed the company’s dedication to exploring sustainable technology and supporting the cement production process in its pursuit of achieving net zero by 2050. He also expressed the company’s pride in offering one of its cement plants in Spain as the location for the HYIELD trial.
The consortium responsible for the HYIELD project includes several notable organisations, such as MAGTEL, WtEnergy Advanced Solutions, Synhelion, H2SITE, VEOLIA, ENAGAS, EURECAT, CETAQUA, Inveniam Group, CISC, La Farga, MINCATEC, SINTEF, ARISTENG, and ArcelorMittal. Collectively, they bring extensive experience in waste management, hydrogen production, and thermo-chemical processes to the project.
Senior officials of HYIELD have expressed their enthusiasm for participating in this impactful R&D project, with the aim of paving the way for commercial scale-up and replication of waste-to-hydrogen plants across Europe. The group anticipates that the project will create new opportunities for waste valorisation and job creation, while also establishing a low-cost pathway for clean green hydrogen production in Europe.
