In a surprising twist, AMD is diverting attention from its eagerly awaited new CPUs and GPUs to announce its recent foray into the automotive industry. Despite the anticipation surrounding the unveiling of AMD’s new processors and graphics cards at CES this year, the company has opted to make an early revelation about its new automotive chips – the Versal AI Edge XA adaptive SoC and Ryzen Embedded V2000A Series processor.
The Versal Edge XA adaptive SoCs, developed using a 7nm process node, have been strategically engineered to power the next generation of automotive systems. These state-of-the-art chips are tailored to facilitate a range of functionalities including forward cameras, in-cabin monitoring, LiDAR, radar, automated parking, and autonomous driving. The standout feature of the SoCs is their AI engines, capable of handling diverse AI models such as classification and feature tracking. With an impressive range of capabilities, spanning from 20,000 to 512,000 lookup tables, and the ability to process between 5 and 171 TOPS, these SoCs are poised to revolutionise the automotive industry.
On the other hand, the Ryzen Embedded V2000A series processors have been meticulously designed to power in-car infotainment systems. Similar to the Versal Edge XA SoCs, these chips are constructed using 7nm process technology and are equipped with Zen 2 cores and Radeon Vega 7 graphics.
