Advancing Education with Entrepreneurship: A New Vision for J&K

In a recent development, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed the importance of shifting the focus to entrepreneurship within the education sector. The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Board for Creating and Developing Entrepreneurship (ABCDE), established under the J&K Higher Education Council, was chaired by the LG at Raj Bhawan. During the meeting, Sinha underscored the significance of integrating entrepreneurship into the academic curriculum.

Sinha articulated the necessity for higher education institutions in J&K to revamp traditional classroom learning and reorient their curriculum to emphasise entrepreneurship. He believes this approach will cultivate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in students, as well as encourage hands-on activities and collaborative projects with various industries.

The LG commended J&K for its pioneering efforts in implementing innovative initiatives within the education sector and stressed the need for higher education institutions to undertake a self-assessment of their capabilities. He advocated for a collaborative model of ‘Entrepreneurship with Education’ that aligns with the National Education Policy, enhancing the region’s position as an innovator in education.

Furthermore, Sinha emphasized the significance of providing mentorship to students and creating an enabling environment where they can actualize their ideas and aspirations. He also highlighted the need to strengthen the connection between industry and academia, fostering partnerships with corporate entities to bolster entrepreneurial initiatives.

During the meeting, attendees discussed a comprehensive strategy for seamlessly integrating entrepreneurship into the academic curriculum, as well as the establishment of a progressive entrepreneurship ecosystem driven by the Design Your Degree programme.

Distinguished figures in the industry, including Senior Managing Director of Accenture, Piyush N Singh; Co-founder of Hughes Systique Corporation, Vinod Sood; Managing Director of Media Guru, Sanjay Salil; Global SVP Chief Corporate Affairs and Public Policy Officer at InMobi, Subi Chaturvedi; and Co-founders of Timoniyo Design, Aditi Kakar and Garima Sipani, were also present at the meeting. They provided valuable insights on promoting startups and entrepreneurship in J&K, enriching the discourse with their expertise.

The meeting was attended by Vice Chairman of the J&K Higher Education Council, Prof Dinesh Singh; Principal Secretary of the Higher Education Department, Alok Kumar; Principal Secretary to the LG, Mandeep Kumar Bhandari; Commissioner Secretary of the Industries and Commerce Department, Vikramjit Singh; Vice Chancellors of various universities; Director of CIC Delhi University; Director of Colleges; and other esteemed board members.

The LG’s vision for advancing education with entrepreneurship is indeed a step in an exciting new direction, with the potential to bring about transformative change in J&K’s higher education landscape. As higher education institutions in the region embrace the integration of entrepreneurship into their academic framework, they are poised to produce graduates equipped with the skills and mindset needed to drive innovation and growth in the entrepreneurial sphere. This forward-looking approach aligns with the broader national and global emphasis on nurturing a culture of entrepreneurship within educational institutions, positioning J&K as a frontrunner in this progressive movement.
