Sierra Leonean entrepreneurs applying for UPG Biashara will receive priority selection into the Class of 2024, and once accepted, they will have access to a wide range of support, including both hard and soft skills development. In addition, they will have the opportunity to connect with entrepreneurs from over 50 countries worldwide, expanding their network and gaining valuable insights from like-minded individuals.
The Diamonds Do Good® Entrepreneurship Grant is the cornerstone of the UPG Biashara program, providing grants that can be invested directly into the entrepreneurs’ businesses. With a unique partnership value of USD 130,000, the grant aims to accelerate the positive impact that entrepreneurs can have in their communities, particularly in the area of natural diamond mining.
In 2023, 20 finalists from 7 countries were selected for the UPG Biashara program, and 10 entrepreneurs received cash grants through the Diamonds Do Good® Entrepreneurship Grant. The winners went through a series of competitive rounds, including “Shark Tank” style pitches, demonstrating the rigorous selection process to identify deserving entrepreneurs.
Among the recipients was Desta Ali, who leads Paenina Nutri-Solutions, an organization focused on combating diabetes in Freetown by advocating for dietary and lifestyle modifications. Another recipient, Isata Jalloh, is the proprietor of STEM GARAGE, a digital learning center for primary school students. The third recipient, Andrew Sahr Norma, leads Greentech Bioenergy, which addresses waste management and clean cooking options in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone has been identified as a priority country for the UPG Biashara in 2024, demonstrating the commitment to supporting and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit in the country.
