In an exertion to capitalize on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the betterment of public safety, a team of researchers at Purdue University Northwest (PNW) has formulated and tested a Gunshot Detection System empowered by AI. Under the guidance of Wei (David) Dai, an assistant professor of Computer Science and director of the Advanced Intelligence Software Lab, the team is striving to enhance safety on school campuses and diminish response times to incidents involving gun violence.
The formation of the Gunshot Detection System was the consequence of a cooperative initiative between faculty, students, and the PNW Police Department. The research team, in association with three student research assistants, worked closely with law enforcement officials to devise and evaluate the system, which has exhibited the potential to notably augment response times in the event of an active shooter situation.
One of the principal discoveries from the research team’s scrutiny of active shooter scenarios at schools was the regular delay in human recognition of gunshots, which was ascertained to be approximately five minutes before a 911 call was issued. In contrast to other commercial gunshot detection technologies that are expensive to implement, the Gunshot Detection System devised by the PNW research team presents a cost-effective solution, with projected installation costs of only up to £5,000 per module.
