The Scotch whisky industry has emerged as a significant contributor to the UK economy, accounting for more than a quarter of all food and drink exports. As per a recent report, the industry generated a substantial £7.1 billion for the UK in 2022, representing a remarkable 29% increase in gross value added (GVA) since 2018.
The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), representing the sector, has underscored the industry’s pivotal role in the UK’s economic landscape. Mark Kent, the chief executive of the SWA, highlighted the industry’s resilience in the face of challenges such as retaliatory tariffs in the United States and the global pandemic. He stressed the importance of government support to facilitate continued investment and growth in the UK economy.
Furthermore, the Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has recognized the significant contribution of the Scotch whisky industry to Scotland, emphasizing its importance to the entirety of the UK. The UK government has demonstrated its support by implementing measures to protect the industry’s interests, including the removal of punitive tariffs imposed on the US market and the pursuit of new global trade agreements to safeguard the reputation of Scotch whisky.
In terms of employment, Scotch whisky is a major creator of jobs, supporting a total of 66,000 jobs across the UK, with 41,000 located in Scotland. The industry has witnessed the creation of 24,000 jobs over the past decade, reflecting its substantial impact on workforce development.
Wellbeing Economy Secretary Neil Gray has highlighted the industry’s invaluable contribution to Scotland, noting that its continued growth in global markets is not only beneficial for job creation and investment but also enhances the appeal of Scotland as a tourist destination.
