Advances in Reusable Rocket Technology: Zhuque-3 Successfully Completes Vertical Return Test

LandSpace, a private rocket company in China, has reached a significant milestone in reusable rocket technology. The successful completion of the vertical return test of Zhuque-3 at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China marks a momentous achievement for the country’s space program.

The flight test represents a crucial advancement in the development of China’s first stainless steel liquid carrier rocket. It confirmed the rocket’s ability to vertically recover at low altitude and low speed, as well as the effectiveness of the control system and engine thrust adjustment performance. Additionally, it tested the rocket’s vertical recovery guidance and control algorithm.

Zhuque-3, with a diameter of 4.5 meters, uses liquid oxygen-methane as propellant and is designed for its first stage to be reused at least 20 times. This groundbreaking technology has the potential to significantly reduce launch costs by 80 to 90 percent when compared to single-use rockets, revolutionizing space missions.

Moreover, the rocket has the capability to launch multiple satellites, including flat stackable satellites, making it an invaluable asset for future space endeavors. Its high-strength stainless steel storage tank offers superior durability and cost-effectiveness.

The successful launch of Zhuque-2, the previous version, was a significant breakthrough as it became the world’s first liquid oxygen-methane rocket to enter orbit, showcasing the application of new low-cost liquid propellants for China’s launch vehicles.

Zhang Changwu, CEO of LandSpace, highlighted the benefits of the stainless steel rocket body structure, emphasizing its potential to greatly reduce manufacturing costs and production cycles of rockets. The rocket’s high temperature resistance also presents clear advantages for multiple returns and reuse of rockets.

Furthermore, the first-stage engine of Zhuque-3 is designed to be checked without being separated from the rocket after recovery, and can be refueled for subsequent flights, similar to the operational model of commercial airplanes.
