The recently concluded Youth STEM Learning Festival in Karachi saw participants from different sessions stressing the need to promote entrepreneurship within the context of STEM education. The panel discussion titled ‘Empowering the Youth: Entrepreneurship in STEM Fields’ highlighted the significance of instilling an entrepreneurial mindset within the current education system. Experts underscored the importance of incorporating entrepreneurship into the curriculum and integrating new technologies, immersive learning, and VR at the tertiary/intermediate level to equip young people with digital skills for improved career prospects.
One of the key takeaways from the festival was the need to share success stories with local communities, as this can inspire them to develop innovative ideas and pursue their dreams. It was noted that the prevailing emphasis on achieving specific milestones often hinders the natural talents of children, making it essential to encourage them to follow their aspirations.
Another point of discussion was the lack of science festivals in Pakistan, with only a few organizations hosting such events. While traditional activities like Meena Bazar and cooking competitions are commonplace in schools, there is a noticeable absence of exhibitions featuring science models. The experts highlighted the importance of addressing this gap to foster an interest in science among young learners.
In his closing speech, Mr. Partab Shivani, the chief of Thar Education Alliance, expressed his gratitude to the scientists, experts, officials, students, and all those who participated in the three-day festival. He emphasized that the primary goal of the event was to promote STEM education among students. Mr. Shivani also commended the students from 50 schools in Karachi who showcased their models during the festival, leaving a lasting impression on the visitors. He pledged to organize similar events in Tharparkar, Karachi, and other parts of the province to encourage students to actively engage in such initiatives.
Moreover, Mr. Shivani expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiastic participation in the event and reiterated the alliance’s commitment to organizing similar activities in underserved areas. He highlighted the successful implementation of comparable events in Tharparkar and other backward regions, signaling a step in the right direction for the promotion of STEM education.
As the festival drew to a close, the call to boost entrepreneurship in STEM education echoed as a crucial step towards nurturing a new generation of innovative and forward-thinking individuals. It served as a reminder of the collective responsibility to empower young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive and technology-driven world.
