The Future of Data Services: How 5G Technology is Set to Increase Revenues for Egypt Telecom

Telecom Egypt’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mohamed Nasr, has made a notable announcement regarding the influence of 5G technology on data services. According to Nasr, the introduction of 5G is expected to result in a substantial increase in revenue from data services over the next five years. He also indicated that the deployment of the 5G network will be targeted in specific areas based on economic viability.

On the previous Wednesday, Telecom Egypt acquired a 5G license for $150 million, which will be valid for 15 years. The company has already commenced the trial phase of the service in five locations, including its headquarters in the Smart Village. The rollout will occur gradually, with the deployment being based on economic feasibility in different regions.

Nasr anticipates that a trial period of 3 to 5 months will be necessary before the service is officially launched for commercial use. He also affirmed that approximately 50% of Telecom Egypt’s network is already 5G-ready, requiring only minor software updates.

Regarding smartphone compatibility, Nasr noted that approximately 8% of smartphones in the Egyptian market are 5G-compatible. Notably, in June 2021, the first shared 5G-enabled mobile tower was established in the New Capital through a partnership between the Administrative Capital for Urban Development and Telecom Egypt. This shared mobile tower will enable all four mobile companies to provide various mobile services through one tower, supporting 4G, 3G, 2G, and 5G technology.

The implementation of 5G technology is poised to have a wide range of applications and benefits, particularly due to its high-speed data transfer capabilities. Some of the sectors that can benefit from 5G services include applications for smart cities, waste management, and port administration.

This development presents a significant opportunity for Telecom Egypt as it plans for the future and enhances its services with the latest technology. With the growing demand for high-speed data and connectivity, the introduction of 5G is expected to be a transformative force for the telecommunications industry in Egypt.

The potential impact of 5G technology on data services is substantial, as it will not only provide faster and more reliable connectivity but also increase revenue opportunities for companies operating in this sector. As 5G technology continues to be implemented across various regions, it is positioned to revolutionize the way data services are accessed and utilized, paving the way for a new era of connectivity and digital innovation.
