Africa has been long celebrated for its exceptional entrepreneurial spirit and resourceful innovators who are revolutionising their communities with groundbreaking ideas. After being inspired by the innovators he encountered during his 2017 visit to Africa, Jack Ma, the co-founder of Alibaba Group, launched the Africa Netpreneur Prize which has now been rebranded as Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH). The ABH initiative aims to identify, spotlight, and provide support to 100 African entrepreneurs over a 10-year period, whose innovations are addressing challenges within their communities.
With a large digitally-savvy youth population, Africa is well-positioned for innovation and entrepreneurship. A thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem not only attracts investments but catalyses economic growth. Since 2019, the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Philanthropy have been fostering entrepreneurship in Africa by providing grant funding, mentorship, and entrepreneurship training programmes. This has played a pivotal role in encouraging innovation on the continent and empowering African entrepreneurs to make a profound impact on their communities.
As the ABH initiative reaches its five-year milestone, it is important to reflect on the impact it has had across Africa, as detailed in the Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) Coffee Book.
Inclusivity and Diversity
ABH has made a commitment to supporting entrepreneurs from all corners of Africa, regardless of age, gender, or sector. The initiative has welcomed various innovators, from the agritech founder in Ghana to the ingenious inventor in Rwanda and the visionary in Egypt. This inclusivity is evident in the way the initiative has supported entrepreneurs spanning digital and consumer services, science, education, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, and the energy sector in Africa.
Nurturing Global Innovators
ABH has successfully nurtured African entrepreneurs, propelling many of them to make a global impact. With the strong support of the initiative, these entrepreneurs have weathered business storms, raised funding, and achieved international success. ABH participants have raised over $153 million in investment and served over 37.5 million customers globally. They are playing a key role in modernising infrastructure and services, while also reshaping the global narrative of Africans through their excellence.
Female Empowerment
Women-led businesses in Africa have historically received minimal venture capital funding, despite the continent having the highest number of women-led businesses globally. Understanding the significance of women in the entrepreneurial ecosystem is vital for sustainable growth in Africa. ABH has recognised this by providing extensive funding, mentorship, and business support for female entrepreneurs. Over the course of five years, women have been awarded 47% of the ABH prize money and accounted for 42% of the 50 ABH finalists and 60% of the grand prize winners.
Economic Empowerment and Community Building
The impact of ABH is clear, with over $7 million in prize money awarded to 50 top heroes, resulting in over $252 million in revenue and the creation of over 123,000 direct and indirect jobs. This is a testament to an initiative that has positively impacted the lives of thousands of Africans. The funding, mentorship, and support provided by ABH have aided the growth of businesses and communities, as well as spurred overall economic growth of the continent.
Looking Ahead
As we delve into the stories chronicled in the ABH Coffee Book, we are presented with stories of triumph, resilience, and innovation that span various ages, demographics, and regions of Africa. This fifth anniversary serves as an opportunity to reflect on the ways in which the African entrepreneurship ecosystem has benefited from ABH. It also shows potential areas for the initiative to deepen its impact, and serves as an encouragement for aspiring entrepreneurs to venture into the entrepreneurship landscape.
