Fuyao Glass Expands Automotive Glass Capacity in China

The Chinese automotive glass giant Fuyao Glass Industry Group has recently announced its second capacity expansion plan in less than a month, in response to the rapid growth of the local new energy vehicle industry. The company has revealed its intention to invest a total of CNY5.8 billion (USD804 million) in the construction of a new plant with an annual production capacity of 2,610 million square meters of automotive glass, as well as two high-quality float glass production lines in Hefei, China’s eastern Anhui province.

In recent years, Hefei and its surrounding cities have attracted numerous automakers, such as the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD and the German car manufacturer Volkswagen. This has resulted in the establishment of a NEV supply chain ecosystem, making the area an ideal location for Fuyao Glass to expand its operations.

The new project is expected to not only strengthen the company’s collaborations with its customers, but also ensure a sustained and stable supply of upstream raw materials, which are crucial for the company’s growth and development.

This development comes shortly after Fuyao Glass announced another significant investment of CNY3.3 billion in the construction of a plant with an annual production capacity of over 20.5 million sqm of automotive glass in its hometown of Fuqing in Fujian province, in order to meet the demand of global automotive markets. With these expansions, Fuyao Glass aims to fulfill the increasing demands of the automotive industry.

Fuyao Glass already holds a substantial presence in the automotive glass industry, boasting a 60 percent share of the Chinese market and over 30 percent of the global market. The company’s automotive glass and float glass production capacities reached 131 million sqm and 1.7 million tons, respectively, in 2022.

Moreover, the documentary American Factory, which depicted Fuyao Glass’ actual controller Cao Dewang’s investment in a glass factory in Ohio, the US, secured the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2019, further solidifying the company’s presence on the global stage.

The announcement of Fuyao Glass’ expansion plans has been positively received, as evidenced by the company’s stock performance. Its Shanghai-listed stock [SHA: 600660] closed up 2.19 percent, while its Hong Kong-listed stock [HKG: 3606] closed down 0.83 percent. This indicates investors’ confidence in the company’s future and its expansion plans.

In summary, Fuyao Glass’ expansion plans underscore the company’s dedication to meeting the increasing demand for automotive glass, particularly in the new energy vehicle segment. With its robust market presence and strategic investments, Fuyao Glass is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in the global automotive glass industry.
