A delegation from the esteemed luxury car manufacturer McLaren is preparing for a special visit to University College Isle of Man (UCM) to deliver informative presentations on the automotive industry.

The educational event, scheduled for Monday, February 5, will feature presentations by Robert Yates, Ella Podmore MBE, and Beth Elliot, who will also be bringing along a McLaren Artura for attendees to explore. These industry professionals will share insights into their careers in engineering and provide valuable knowledge about the automotive sector.

The visit, coinciding with ‘national apprenticeship week’, is open to individuals aged 14 and above who are currently pursuing education. This presents a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable knowledge from experts in the field and engage with local industry professionals.

Robert Yates, a body engineering project manager at McLaren, is particularly looking forward to returning to his hometown of Isle of Man to participate in the event. Following his education at St Ninian’s High School, Robert obtained a bachelor of engineering degree in automotive engineering from Huddersfield University before commencing his career at Vauxhall.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming visit, Robert shared, “I’m passionate about promoting STEM subjects and highlighting the exciting careers that can stem from these disciplines. This event will provide a great opportunity for individuals considering a career in the industry to gain valuable insights.”

Joining Robert is Ella, a senior materials engineer at McLaren with almost six years of experience at the company. Beth, on the other hand, serves as a graduate engineer in the powertrain department and is also part of the visiting delegation. Notably, Ella was recently honoured with an MBE for her contributions to engineering, innovation, and diversity.

In anticipation of the event, Julie Edge, Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, encourages young people with an interest in engineering to take advantage of this opportunity to explore potential careers within the automotive industry and learn about the resources available at UCM.

Furthermore, the team of experts will engage with students at St Ninian’s, Ballakermeen, and QEII to impart their knowledge and insights into the engineering field, with plans to expand their outreach to other schools as well.

Individuals interested in attending this enlightening event are encouraged to register on the UCM website at www.ucm.ac.im/mclaren to secure their spot and gain valuable knowledge about the automotive industry.

The educational talks by McLaren’s team at UCM are set to be an insightful and inspiring opportunity for individuals to explore potential careers in the automotive industry and gain valuable insights from industry professionals. With the encouragement of Minister Julie Edge, young people with an interest in engineering are invited to take advantage of this unique learning opportunity and take their first steps towards a rewarding career in the automotive sector.
