2 min read

Microsoft has recently unveiled its latest tool, Reading Coach, which is currently in the public preview phase and is aimed at assisting primary school students in India, the UK, and the USA in enhancing their reading abilities. This AI-powered platform is currently undergoing testing by hundreds of students, with the largest group of 75 students situated in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District in Southern California. The initial feedback from educators and students has been encouraging, with fifth-grade teacher Ana Ruiz from Baldwin Academy stating that the tool has significantly impacted her students in a positive manner. The tool enables students to select their own stories and reading levels, catering to readers with varying skill levels.

Reading Coach utilizes AI to identify and guide students when they encounter challenging words, promoting independent practice and improvement. Additionally, the platform provides educators with valuable metrics to monitor student progress, enabling customized instruction to meet individual needs. Teresa Magpayo Castro, a technology teacher on special assignment in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, emphasized how the tool has allowed her to consistently evaluate students’ reading fluency and adjust instruction accordingly.

At present, the tool offers content in US English, with Microsoft intending to broaden its scope to encompass other languages and dialects in the near future. As part of the Learning Accelerators available through Microsoft Education, Reading Coach also permits students to craft their own stories using AI, providing a range of character options and settings to ignite creativity and engagement.

Microsoft’s endeavour to harness the potential of AI to enhance students’ reading skills represents an encouraging advancement in leveraging technology for educational purposes. The positive response from educators and students involved in the pilot programme underscores the potential impact of this innovative platform. With the capacity to accommodate students with differing reading abilities and the promise of expansion to other languages, Reading Coach has the potential to become an invaluable tool in the educational arena.

As the pilot programme progresses and more students and educators engage with Reading Coach, it will be intriguing to observe the long-term effects and advantages that this AI-powered platform brings to the realm of education. Through the integration of AI technology in educational resources, Microsoft is demonstrating its dedication to enriching learning experiences and supporting students in their academic pursuits.
