Important Things to Know When Transitioning from PIP to Adult Disability Payment

3 min read

Individuals currently in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Disability Living Allowance for Children (DLA for Child) from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in Scotland will soon undergo automatic transfer to the new Adult Disability Payment and Child Disability Payment. These devolved benefits are intended to provide financial support to disabled individuals and those with long-term health conditions.

The transition process from PIP to Adult Disability Payment is anticipated to be completed by the conclusion of 2025. Throughout this transition, individuals will receive correspondence from Social Security Scotland informing them of their impending Adult Disability Payment or Child Disability Payment, as well as guidance on how to ensure the ongoing receipt of any other benefits from the DWP or HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

It is imperative for individuals to apprise relevant organizations such as their local council, DWP, and HMRC of their transfer to Social Security Scotland, particularly if they receive benefits or services related to their disability payment. This notification is critical to prevent any interruptions in benefit payments.

During the transition to Social Security Scotland, individuals currently receiving Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, or Council Tax Exemption must liaise with their local council. Likewise, those in receipt of Universal Credit, Income Support, Pension Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) should inform the DWP of their transfer.

Furthermore, individuals whose disability payment rate has changed during the transition and who receive Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, or Carer’s Allowance should contact HMRC. Additionally, individuals who care for someone and receive Carer’s Allowance should notify the Carer’s Allowance Unit of the transition.

Those transitioning to Adult Disability Payment and with a carer receiving Carer’s Allowance must also contact the Carer’s Allowance Unit to provide information about the shift to Social Security Scotland, as this information will not be shared automatically.
