In a recent appearance on a Television Continental (TVC) programme, Wale Akinterinwa, the former commissioner of finance in Ondo, asserted that the late Rotimi Akeredolu had specifically chosen him as his successor before his passing. This revelation was made following Akeredolu’s return from a medical trip to Germany in 2023.

“I’m also aware that he told certain people about that desire. The conversation happened immediately after he came back from Germany,” Akinterinwa stated confidently, revealing the discussion that took place in Akeredolu’s office, where he expressed his wish for Akinterinwa to take over from him and even offered prayers for his success.

The former commissioner, who is now vying for the governorship ticket of the state on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also conveyed his optimism about securing the gubernatorial ticket, asserting, “At an appropriate time, I will make my intentions known. I am confident that I will get the ticket. The people are with me.”

Acknowledging the dedication of his supporters who awaited his arrival at the Akure airport, Akinterinwa expressed his gratitude and assured them of reciprocating their unwavering support.

“I am humbled by your perseverance. You have been here since morning. I came late due to a delay in my flight as a result of poor weather,” he expressed. “A lot of flights were canceled due to the weather. We had the opportunity to fly when the weather became clear enough and approved by the authority.”

Addressing the crowd, he continued, “I know you have been waiting for about eight hours to express your appreciation to me after my meritorious service to our state for about seven years. Your gesture is a testimonial that when you do well, people will appreciate you. This is a manifestation of better things to come.”

The bold declaration by the former finance commissioner has sparked a wave of interest and anticipation in the political landscape of Ondo. As the election draws closer, it will be interesting to see how this revelation will impact the dynamics of the gubernatorial race.
