In a collaborative endeavour, ABC Owned Television Stations and Microsoft Philanthropy have joined forces to illuminate the significance of entrepreneurship within the Black community. The one-hour documentary special, “Our America: In The Black,” delves into the experiences of individuals endeavouring to establish generational wealth and combat the racial wealth chasm.
Darrell Booker, a Microsoft Philanthropy specialist, stands at the vanguard of closing the racial wealth gap through all-encompassing digital initiatives. His efforts have brought him to Atlanta, Georgia, renowned as the Black Mecca, where Black and brown communities thrive and provide mutual support. Booker underscores the weight of mentorship in the path to triumph, highlighting the promising prospects for all to accomplish their aspirations.
Notwithstanding this optimistic standpoint, statistics divulge that just 9% of enterprises in the Atlanta metropolitan area are Black-owned. Recognising the pivotal role of entrepreneurship in diminishing the racial wealth gap, the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs is committed to establishing and amplifying more Black enterprises. Through fostering collaborations, investments, and mentorship, the organisation seeks to empower small business proprietors and entrepreneurs.
The documentary introduces Meagan Naraine, a postgraduate student and co-founder of Culturally Relevant Science, a startup delivering STEM education to children from historically underrepresented communities. Naraine’s impetus arises from the underrepresentation of minority groups in STEM fields. She envisions her digital platform as a comprehensive resource to assist children requiring support in pursuing STEM education.
Booker coordinates a mentorship session for Naraine, connecting her with influential individuals who have achieved success in their respective entrepreneurial ventures.
