Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship: A Decade of Progress

The evolution of women through entrepreneurship and the consequent improvement in their quality of life have experienced notable growth over the last decade, as articulated by the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman. In her presentation of the interim Budget 2024-25, she disclosed that 30 crore Mudra Yojana loans have been disbursed to women entrepreneurs. Moreover, she underscored a 28 per cent surge in female enrolment in higher education during the same period.

The minister highlighted that in STEM courses (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), women now constitute 43 per cent of enrolment, marking one of the highest percentages globally. Sitharaman emphasized that the past decade has witnessed substantive advancements in women’s empowerment through entrepreneurship, improved living standards, and the promotion of women’s dignity, as evidenced by their augmented involvement in the workforce.

Sitharaman also underscored the legislative actions, such as the proscription of triple talaq, the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies, and the allocation of over 70 per cent of houses under the PM Awas Yojana in rural areas to women as sole or joint owners, as contributing to the enhancement of women’s dignity.

The affirmative actions taken to empower women in various domains have undeniably yielded a positive impact on their participation in education and the workforce, thereby contributing to the overall advancement of the nation. The 28 per cent increase in female enrolment in higher education stands as a testimony to the success of these initiatives. Furthermore, the substantial upsurge in the number of Mudra Yojana loans extended to women entrepreneurs serves as a clear indication of the escalating interest and involvement of women in entrepreneurial endeavors.

The upliftment of women through entrepreneurship and the establishment of a conducive environment to enhance their quality of life are pivotal strides towards attaining gender equality and fostering sustainable development. The measures implemented over the past decade, as elucidated by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, mirror the government’s commitment to empowering women and nurturing an inclusive and progressive society.

As the nation continues to make advances towards gender equality and women’s empowerment, it is imperative to recognize the significance of sustained support and initiatives to further augment the participation and contribution of women in various sectors of society. The government’s efforts, coupled with women’s determination to excel in their chosen fields, play a crucial role in propelling the momentum of progress and empowerment.
