Thailand is well-known for its diverse and rich culinary offerings, ranging from spicy Isaan catfish soup to contemporary Thai creations. The Michelin Guide Thailand 2024 has recently added new and unexpected establishments to its list, creating an eclectic mix of dining experiences that should not be overlooked.
One of the latest Michelin-recognised venues is Penlaos, nestled in the hills of northeastern Thailand. This unassuming eatery offers a wide selection of 200 dishes and has quickly gained acclaim for its traditional riverside cuisine. Its proprietor, Panchana Vatanasathien, expressed great joy upon receiving the Bib Gourmand, an accolade bestowed upon establishments offering exceptionally good food at reasonable prices.
Moving to Bangkok, Baan Tepa, headed by chef Chudaree “Tam” Debhakam, has been awarded its second Michelin star. The restaurant takes diners on a culinary journey with a nine-course presentation that showcases a focused distillation of Thai flavours. Similarly, Suan Thip, situated by the riverside, impresses with its Japanese garden-inspired setting and delightful dishes crafted by the self-trained master of textures, Chef Banyen Ruangsantheia.
For a taste of Indian cuisine, Inddee, a recently established restaurant, has made its mark with innovative dishes that celebrate the diverse flavours of the Indian subcontinent. Head chef Sachin Poojary and Michelin sommelier of the year, Thanakorn “Jay” Bottorff, have elevated the dining experience with their creative tasting menu.
Meanwhile, Mauro Colaegreco’s Côte, located in Bangkok’s Capella hotel, has brought the vibrant flavours of Thai cuisine to a global audience. Here, guests can indulge in a set lunch menu featuring a fusion of local ingredients and international culinary techniques.
During my stay at Asai Sathorn near Chinatown, Bangkok, I also had the opportunity to experience Err Urban Rustic Thai, a restaurant that offers a modern Thai set lunch featuring a diverse array of regional flavours.
In conclusion, this culinary tour of Michelin-rated restaurants in Thailand underscores the country’s dynamic food scene. Each venue, from the unassuming Penlaos to the innovative Inddee, has brought something unique to the table and has left a lasting impression on visitors. Therefore, if you are planning a trip to Thailand, be sure to set aside some time for a gastronomic journey through these exceptional dining establishments.
